In a traditional business, the phone system or the PBX (Private Branch eXchange), is typically a piece of equipment located in your office. Traditional PBX systems are both costly and bulky and often need to be housed in a store or separate office. With a traditional system, calls come in to you via your PBX from the external phone system, and then lines run from the PBX to all the phone extensions in your company. A hosted PBX system, it works in a similar way but the PBX itself is stored at a remote location by a service provider who manages or ‘hosts’ the system for you; and all that you need in your office are the phones and an internet connection.

How does it work?

Hosted PBX systems all run on IP networks, meaning that they use the same circuitry and wiring as your company's data network (LAN). They pass information back and forth via the same mechanisms as any office network or the Internet itself. The advantages of this setup are that your company only needs one set of wiring in its office for all communications. Data and voice networks can cross-communicate with one another more easily, and you probably only need one person to administer and maintain the voice and data networks.

When a call is made, the phone connects to the IP network, then gets switched out to the remote hosted service, which establishes what number is being called and creates a connection via VoIP protocols across the IP network (VoIP: Voice Over Internet Protocol).
